Angling expo 2015 - Dublin National show centre

The Dublin Angling show - Feb 2015

We arrived at 10 am in the morning, and it was not too busy with only a few people around . The early start had helped a lot as we had a chance to walk around and get our bearings before it got too busy.

The show was in a large hall with lots of stalls, from water safety to all types of angling. After a little walk around we walked past the Inland Fisheries Specimen Stand. Mike Hennessy was at the stand and he introduced himself to me.I was given the specimen book, which I hope to be featured in next year. This is a link to the website, it is one of my favourite to visit.  http://irish-trophy-fish.com/

Mike then introduced me to a very well known journalist from UK. He writes for some of the top fishing magazines. His name is Mike Thrussell, I was very excited to meet him as I have read many of his articles.

It took us a few hours to walk around the show, there was a seminar taking place and we decided that we might learn something interesting from it. It was held in the theater upstairs and Jim Clohessy was talking about lure fishing and the mistakes he made and that many people make. I've always been interested in lure fishing and he really inspired me to go out and get it right. I have made most of the mistakes that he talked about and was happy to learn how to do it right. I had so many questions to ask him, but I settled for just one, I wanted to know did he do much rock fishing as this is what I want to do. His fishing is mainly done by boat, but I'm going to try off the the rocks with my new knowledge.
At the end of the talk he gave me a reel and said to me ' you will need this for your rock fishing'
I politely thanked him .

I spent the next few hours searching for the perfect rod to match my new reel. Jim had also recommended a new line called Gliss that was in between mono filament and braid . I managed to find this at South Side Angling centre who had a stand at the show.

Time flew and it was time to go home, we had a last walk around and I had a chance to look at the rest of the stands. It was a lot of fun, It was worth visiting and good value for money. I will most certainly go again next year. If you have ever wondered if it is worth attending then I would say YES.

There was plenty to see with every type of fishing stand from coarse to sea and fly to lure. Demonstrations all day long, seminars and interesting things going on all the time. We got to see freshly hatched salmon eggs, also known as alvin. We were given goody bags and show souvenirs. I enjoyed meeting everyone and look forward to next year. I hope to see you there next year and look out for me.

Jeremy Wade - My Inspiration

Jeremy Wade with a large catfish he caught in India

Jeremy John Wade is a British television presenter and author. He is known for his television series River Monsters and Jungle Hooks.
The reason I'm making a post for him is because he is my idol, I have been watching him for many years and he has inspired me to fish and to do what I do. I would love to follow in his foot steps one day and become as successful at fishing at he is.
If any of you watch his show you will understand how dedicated to what he does, overcoming fears and on occasions he fishes for months to get results. One episode he fishes for months to catch a gigantic Gooch catfish in India. If you haven't watched it then I suggest you tune in on Animal Planet to one of the most successful programmes they have shown

A Day On Rosbeigh

We woke up to a crisp frosty morning. Our plan was to go fishing for an hour or two. We gathered all the gear and got the bait. Mum had a new rod that she was looking forward to trying it out. It was a Conoflex flatie quiver tip. She also got a new reel.

We decided to go to Rossbeigh Beach- this is a long spit of sand , beach and dunes, about 2 km from Glenbeigh village. Accredited with the blue flag status this beach is excellent for many water sports and fishing

When we arrived there was snow on the mountain but we knew straight away there was fish there. While mom and dad were getting ready and sorting their gear out I was getting mine ready. I carried all my gear down to the edge of the water. Oisin came down next to me so I helped set him up first. After I cast his bait out I set up mine. Then Mom and Dad came down. They cast out and within five minutes they caught fish. Dad got a nice 30 cm Flounder.

Suddenly my rod rattled a little bit I brought it in and there was a small fish on it. After that I caught one a bit bigger.

Mom christened her rod with a flounder, in total she caught 5 and Dad caught 6. The best fish of the day was a 50 cm Sea Trout caught by Mom.

The day was a very good one and I enjoyed it. I have a competition there on the 14th of February and I hope it will fish just as good.

Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club

I'm a member of Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club. We have some top anglers in the club. I have been in the club for three years. In that time I have learned a lot of tricks from some of the other members for example I have learned about bait presentation, what fish is attracted to what bait, how to cast comfortably, where the fish will be hunting and what rigs I should use in what weather.
Tralee Bay  SAC is part of the I.F.S.A [Irish, Federation, Sea, Angling]. The club was founded in 1958. It has it's headquarters in Fenit, Co. Kerry. Last year for the first time we had Tag a Ray weekend in May it was great crack and gave me a chance to catch my first ray. Also they have lots of competitions.

We fished our first competition of the year on Sunday on Fenit Pier, the weather was so bad and blew in our face for 4 solid hours, with no fish for me. I was understandably upset, as any other angler will know 'a blank ' is the worst thing. Not a good start to the year for me, but we still have 11 to go.

I.F.S.A Species hunt 2014

Its been an exciting year for me, not only only have I discovered my love for fishing, but I also discovered the species hunt. Click here to go to species hunt website

The species hunt is a national fish hunt, where anglers compete to catch as many species as possible around the coast line of Ireland. People take part from all over Ireland and this is my first year.

For me the species hunt has taken me to new places, and taught me about fish I didn't even know about. I've had to learn what fish takes what bait, what rig to use and the different techniques on how to catch them.

I've been competing against some very tough opponents in the Junior Section. I am currently second but would really like to change that but with only two days to go it will be challenging.

My favorite species I have caught so far are Stingray, Bass, Cod , Thornback Ray and a large flounder. I have also enjoyed finding out about and hunting for all the mini species.

I didn't know there would be as many different species in Ireland as there is, its been fun, and given more of an insight to the under water world.

Im looking forward to 2015 because now I have the knowledge and this time I'm ready, my life from now on will revolve around fishing from every angle.

Coming in in 2015....interviews with Master Angler ( hoping to get a few secret tips ), product reviews. Venue write ups and a couple of rig making you tube clips along with my regular updates.

Sunrise to Sunset

Our first day of the Christmas holidays. Most people would prefer a lie in, however, that was not the case for Mom and I.  Sunrise to Sunset was the challenge; to fish as many venues as possible. We woke while the sky was still dark, and set off wrapped up warm for a cold, yet eventful day of fishing.

Kinard was the our first chosen location, for the fact it is a known venue for a beautiful sunrise. It was here that I set up my rod, and Mom began taking some photos. Sadly there was no fish around.

It was on to Dingle, the next place on our list. We arrived at about 11 o clock. We descended the ramp in search of a Red Mouth Gobi. No such luck though but thankfully I caught something,  it was a small Pollack. Again we moved to a new spot but before that we had a little stroll around the town and Mom bought me some Gloves. They were nice, warm and black in colour. Ventry was our next stop. We stayed there for a couple of hours. We got nothing until a ray of hope. I felt a strong rattle on the rod I jerked the rod back and reeled it in. I was filled with joy when I saw it. It was a long spined sea scorpion.( tiny at 9 cm but another one for the species hunt)

Next we decided to go to Smerwick harbor. On the way we stopped at a small little cafe. I had a panini and convinced mom to get me a hot chocolate she smiled and and said 'fine so'. She had a cappuccino and the salad off my plate. With that done and ate we set off again. We skipped clohger as we were running out of time. Smerwick was a handy venue because we could fish were we parked the van.
I cast my line into the white waves of the water. with no luck at all,  Mom decided that I had my last cast. She asked if she could cast my rod I replied ' yes no bother go for it' . When the line sunk to the bottom I tightened it. Ten minutes later my rod started bouncing. I struck the rod with all my might and  fortunately the fish stayed hooked. It was intense until the rod went a little light, I said to Mom that I thought he came off but I kept reeling. A couple winds later and I could feel him again. That's when the fight really began he pulled with all his might but so did I. When we got him to the rocks we could see it was a Bass, Mom went down to pick him up but nearly slipped so she came back up. I chose a rock that looked safer. With one last pull I got him on to the bank. We unhooked him and measured him.
He tuned out to be 53 cm's and 3 half pounds. After that i caught a 34 cm coalfish also known as a coley. it was time to go home after all the excitement. We told every one about the day we had when we got home.
